Diversity in law: a snapshot
*Statistics gathered from the Solicitors Regulation Authority March 2020 and The Law Society 2017-2018 Entry Trends Report
It is no secret that racially diverse teams outperform non-diverse ones. However, city law firms are facing significant challenges recruiting and retaining top BAME talent.
In a recent survey conducted by Isaac Noah, 80% of BAME respondents stated that they were pessimistic about their career progression in their firm and unsure about how to achieve their highest potential. Research shows that the majority of BAME lawyers working at top city firms will leave private practice before partnership discussions begin.
This is intensified when you consider the following statements made by city lawyers in a recent Isaac Noah Survey:
How we help law firms
- Identifying, attracting and actively matching top BAME talent to their hiring needs.
- Working with human resource teams to evaluate their lateral recruitment strategy with a specific focus on diversity and ethnicity.
- Working with law firms to develop, motivate and retain top BAME talent through our standalone Navigate programme.
How we help associates
- Career scoping and career coaching
- Matching their career ambitions and skills to firms within our
Our associate strategy is centered around understanding who our candidates are on a personal level, how they see their career unfolding, what their strengths are and what they want out of their careers. Our goal is to help them self-market themselves with integrity, confidence, and boldness and to empower them to make informed career choices that boost their prospects of success.
A 9-month mutli faceted career programme for city firms committed to developing and progressing their BAME talent.
Through a series of group sessions, one2one mentoring, reverse mentoring and individual career coaching, our goal is to develop future BAME leaders in law. Navigate works with firms to make real change in the legal profession by equipping motivated BAME associates with the tools they need to drive their career to their highest potential.
Key tenets of the programme include:
By the end of the 9 months, we hope that each associate will be better equipped with the following
Increased self-belief in a long-term career with their firm, considering partnership or equivalent as a viable and attainable option.
Clear vision of career goals and career path available within their firm and how their firm will commit to support their progression.
Increased level of emotional intelligence that can enable each participating BAME associate to assimilate better into their firm’s way of working.

Our search and selection process exists to identify BAME business leaders who are distinctive in the organisations they serve.
